DONE (re-tagged by Braiam; synonym still needed)
We've got two tags for translation software:
We only need one, so I would recommend merging and creating a synonym from one to the other. I personally think this should be translation > translators.
We got rid of the tag free because it is ambiguous: it could mean free (libre) software (i.e. open source, software that you can adopt and modify), or freeware (gratis software, i.e. software that the vendor doesn't charge for).
It has recently become possible to show a short guidance text when a poster tries to use a blacklisted tag. I propose:
The tag '...
Thank you for posting this. I noticed this the other day when I was performing a bunch of tag maintenance, and it is on my list of things to address.
Prompted by your post, I took a look at the 14 questions currently tagged with browser. All of them are referring to web browsers and not file browsers or media browsers.
As such, I agree that it's a good ...
Community votes for tag synonyms don't even really work on Stack Overflow, so this issue isn't specific to beta sites. I'd be all for a better system to coordinate tag synonyms among experts, but that system wouldn't be specific to smaller sites, it should be used for all the sites up to SO.
If you think your synonym suggestion is a no-brainer, ask one of ...
We've got mail, emails and email-client. While the first two are already dealt with in my other request: email-client should either be merged into that other group as well, or we wait for email-server. In the latter case, do we still need emails, or rather stick to the two client/server tags? I could imagine emails used in other contexts as well, e.g. some ...
audio should be reserved for software dealing with audio capabilities of the computer (e.g., turning audio on/off, speaker/headphone driver type software, volume controllers, recording sound) instead of being used as a super-umbrella-tag. Possible other aliases: speakers, headphones, audio-capabilities. May be also alias sound and sound-recording.
Good find. Merge performed and synonym created. I've kept the tag name subversion, as noone will search for apache-subversion – and if you look at the bottom of that Wikipedia page, even Wikipedia refers to it simply as "Subversion" in its listings ;)
Tagging and synonyms are created when questions are asked in actual practice. There doesn't seem to currently be anymore questions tagged [online], so we don't generally create synonyms before there is an actual problem or use case for the tag.
First, I did rename appstore to app-store. Sounds reasonable.
I also renamed some of these pluralization/hyphenation tags as they seemed appropriate. The unused tags left behind will be cleaned up shortly, and it will be more difficult to re-create them once the reputation limits are raised when the site goes public.
But tag synonyms are really designed to ...
DONE retagging. Synonym needed.
Synonym blueray, cd and dvd to optical-media. All programs addressing one will most likely also address the other.
(Edit after two upvotes) Should also include optical-drive.
images is a little confusing, and maybe should be renamed to pictures. Otherwise there might be confusion when it comes to graphics versus disk-images. Same could be said for image-editing (as one could edit e.g. an iso-image as well).
Sure, that could be made clear in the tag-wiki (and excerpt), as currently done by Angelo. But it might prove useful to ...
Currently the tag creation threshold is quite low;
as per the privileges page:
Add new tags to the site
which if you look at the main SO privileges page you see it is significantly reduced (ie by a factor of ten):
Add new tags to the site
Any external users if they have a reasonable level of respectability ...
DONE retagging - Synonym needed.
Tags log and log-analyzer should be merged and synonymized, making log final tag.
SO: log, logs → logging
SU: log, logs → logging
AU: log, logs and logging exist
U&L: logging → logs
Going for logs as the main tag.
I've renamed file-syncinc to file-synchronization, because a tag name that uses a non-necessary, non-consensual abbreviation is a very bad name.
I don't think we need to preemptively define synonym. directory-synchronization is close enough that I hope we can do without it. While a lot of synchronization issues are related to files, there are other things ...
multiplayer is a feature tag that will only be used in conjunction with game. I think this tag should be removed completely as it doesn't really add anything and this detail should be included in the question body as a requirement rather than as a tag.
I do agree as it does add unnecessary confusion. I think if questions require version specific HTML, it can add that as a requirement in the body of the question. I think we should migrate all html5 tags to just html and add html5 as a synonym of html.
A synonym isn't necessary here; I just renamed proxies to proxy — DONE.
Synonyms were intended to link two completely separate words meaning essentially the same thing (think 'car' vs 'auto'). For simple variations on the same word, text completion will help guide the user to the correct usage.
prox → proxy
There's no need to bulk up the tag ...
I am in favour of retagging all non-version-specific osx questions to macos, and making osx a synonym of macos.
If we have version-specific osx questions, for instance OS X 10.4, then we can create a tag osx-10.4 for instance.
I suggest the following definition (and will compare it to "CSV-File"):
Audio is the over arching word containing everything. (compare "File")
Sound is the digital representation of audible things. (compare "Text-File")
Music is the specific element in the realm of Sound. (compare "CSV-File")
Also I feel strongly with this Meta: Lets tighten the reins of ...
For the mods: Please merge+synonymize, as we cannot do so :)
Synonym and merge mms and sms to short-messaging. The distinction is too narrow and if one (but not the other) is needed it should be stated in the question.
There aren't enough questions nor tags to start making synonyms that would make worth the effort. Now really if those questions are about health or fitness just retag them which would take less time and effort to complete ;). I'm just giving a sensible solution to that little problem.
I don't think any change is necessary.
We actually don't want "external" users coming in here with no idea how to use the site and messing up the taxonomy of tags. However during beta the thresholds are already very low to earn the prigs to do this.
If you are completely new to Stack Exchange you will need to earn 150 rep points an order to add tags. This ...
