DONE (re-tagged by Braiam; synonym still needed)
We've got two tags for translation software:
We only need one, so I would recommend merging and creating a synonym from one to the other. I personally think this should be translation > translators.
Thank you for posting this. I noticed this the other day when I was performing a bunch of tag maintenance, and it is on my list of things to address.
Prompted by your post, I took a look at the 14 questions currently tagged with browser. All of them are referring to web browsers and not file browsers or media browsers.
As such, I agree that it's a good ...
children covers all software for children and people with children, parental control is only an example. The tag also covers educational software for children (example).
I propose to reserve children for software intended to be used by children, and use parental-control for parental control software, which is intended to be used by parents.
With names that are so close to each other, keeping both isn't very useful: if you type network, completion will show networking. I left the synonym network for the sake of incoming migrations, since several sites that might plausibly migrate to us use the tag name network.
audio should be reserved for software dealing with audio capabilities of the computer (e.g., turning audio on/off, speaker/headphone driver type software, volume controllers, recording sound) instead of being used as a super-umbrella-tag. Possible other aliases: speakers, headphones, audio-capabilities. May be also alias sound and sound-recording.
We've got mail, emails and email-client. While the first two are already dealt with in my other request: email-client should either be merged into that other group as well, or we wait for email-server. In the latter case, do we still need emails, or rather stick to the two client/server tags? I could imagine emails used in other contexts as well, e.g. some ...
DONE retagging. Synonym needed.
Synonym blueray, cd and dvd to optical-media. All programs addressing one will most likely also address the other.
(Edit after two upvotes) Should also include optical-drive.
images is a little confusing, and maybe should be renamed to pictures. Otherwise there might be confusion when it comes to graphics versus disk-images. Same could be said for image-editing (as one could edit e.g. an iso-image as well).
Sure, that could be made clear in the tag-wiki (and excerpt), as currently done by Angelo. But it might prove useful to ...
The old term was Content Management.
These days, the terms "Knowledge Management" and "Knowledge Organization" are also used. "Knowledge management" will include "Personal Knowledge Management", "Enterprise Knowledge Management", and "Legal Knowledge Management".
Or perhaps the more generic "Information Management" or "Information Organization" or "...
DONE retagging - Synonym needed.
Tags log and log-analyzer should be merged and synonymized, making log final tag.
SO: log, logs → logging
SU: log, logs → logging
AU: log, logs and logging exist
U&L: logging → logs
Going for logs as the main tag.
multiplayer is a feature tag that will only be used in conjunction with game. I think this tag should be removed completely as it doesn't really add anything and this detail should be included in the question body as a requirement rather than as a tag.
I suggest the following definition (and will compare it to "CSV-File"):
Audio is the over arching word containing everything. (compare "File")
Sound is the digital representation of audible things. (compare "Text-File")
Music is the specific element in the realm of Sound. (compare "CSV-File")
Also I feel strongly with this Meta: Lets tighten the reins of ...
For the mods: Please merge+synonymize, as we cannot do so :)
Synonym and merge mms and sms to short-messaging. The distinction is too narrow and if one (but not the other) is needed it should be stated in the question.
As we already got multiple voices on this, let me sum up an answer from the comments:
We already had a related discussion here: Apple mobile device tags
We have comparable tags, e.g. web-apps, google-apps
We also have related tags without the -apps suffix, e.g.: android, windows, linux
Tags without the -apps suffix are usually OS tags (as the examples show),...
I noticed that too, and my initial thought was to merge them.
But then I realized that many people use "photo" or "photograph" to mean the result of a camera, but "photography" to mean the process of using a camera.
Software that edits/organizes/adjusts/filters photos is very different than software that records/takes photographs.
Having tags that reflect ...
